Crime Scene Surveyor (Mapping Specialist)

The Crime Scene Surveyor (Mapping Specialist) supports the PSNI’s work by capturing important details to support investigations and court proceedings. They gather evidence through a wide array of methods including electronic total stations, high-definition survey scanners, sketches, and spherical images.
They then process this raw data in specialist CAD software and reprographics equipment to produce scaled maps and plans. They collate maps, photos, CCTV footage, audio recordings, documents, fingerprints, DNA samples and digital evidence from scene survey and from other agencies. These documents support police investigations and provide evidence during trials.
The post holder must be prepared to submit expert advice to briefings and consultations before trial, and provide expert witness testimony during court proceedings. They should be prepared to attend crime scenes at any time – including evenings and weekends – some of which will be traumatic in nature.
The post holder will also provide maps, plans, visual aids, digital presentations and expert advice to PSNI and other agencies for all operational requirements, such as parades, royal visits, and international events.
To be eligible for this position, candidates must have a minimum of two A Levels, or equivalent, or a Level 3 City & Guilds Certificate in computer-aided design (CAD). They must also have two years’ experience in a professional GIS, cartographic or survey role held in the past five years, and one year of experience using CAD.
Candidates must be computer literate. They must also have a drivers' licence and a car available for official business, which will allow them to meet the requirements of the post in full.
